Yorkshire's Championship Links

Nestled on the North East Coast, Cleveland Golf Club holds a unique place in the golfing landscape: we are Yorkshire’s only true links course and the oldest course in the county. Over our long history, Cleveland has earned a reputation as a championship venue, hosting some of the region’s most prestigious events and welcoming golfers from across the country — and the world

A History of Championships

Our links have tested generations of golfers, and the course has a proud record of hosting top-level competitions. The club first hosted the Yorkshire Amateur Championship in 1896, the same year we hosted our first Yorkshire Team Championship. Since then, we’ve welcomed the Yorkshire Amateur Championship a further nine times and the Yorkshire Team Championship a further eight times, cementing our place at the heart of competitive golf in the county.

More recently, Cleveland has continued to challenge and inspire top amateur players. In 2017, we hosted the Yorkshire Amateur Championship, won by DP World Tour player Alex Fitzpatrick, who set the course record in the process. In 2025, the championship returned to Cleveland, with Max Berrisford of Ilkley Golf Club taking the title.

A Stage for All Champions

2025 was a remarkable year for championships at Cleveland. Alongside the Yorkshire Amateur Championship, we were proud to host the One Armed World Championship, welcoming the best one-armed golfers in the world to the North East Coast. The championship was won by Mark Marshall, who triumphed in a tense playoff.

The club has also played a key role in team events. In 2011, we hosted the Yorkshire Team Championship, won by Wike Ridge, continuing a tradition that stretches back to the 19th century. Cleveland was also the venue for the 2007 English Golf Union (EGU) Men’s County Finals, where Yorkshire was crowned champions — a proud moment in the county’s golfing history.

The Cleveland Salver

Year in, year out, we continue to support competitive golf at all levels. Every season begins with the Cleveland Salver, the opening event on the Yorkshire Order of Merit schedule, giving local amateurs the chance to compete on one of the county’s most historic and challenging courses.

Looking Ahead

Cleveland’s commitment to top-level golf shows no signs of slowing. In 2027, we will host the Brabazon Trophy Qualifier for the North, celebrating our 140th anniversary and marking the club as not only Yorkshire’s Championship Links but also an England Golf Championship venue.

Proud to Be Yorkshire’s Links

Cleveland Golf Club isn’t just a course — we’re a championship venue steeped in history. From hosting the finest amateurs in Yorkshire to welcoming international competitors, our links remain a destination for golfers who want to test themselves on a true coastal course. Whether it’s a major championship or a game with your friends, Cleveland continues to deliver top-class golf in Yorkshire’s only championship links.
