It's US Open week, widely regarded as the toughest test in professional golf. While the world's best players prepare to battle narrow fairways, punishing rough and lightning-fast greens, it got us thinking: which holes do Cleveland Golf Club members find the most challenging?
Every golfer has that hole they approach with a little more caution than the rest, and after speaking with our members, three holes consistently stood out as the toughest tests on the course.
Stroke Index One is a good place to start. The 14th is a hole that demands accuracy from the very first shot.
The challenge starts on the tee, where out of bounds lurks just off the right-hand side of the fairway. The visual pressure alone is enough to make many golfers think twice before pulling the driver.
Finding the fairway is essential, but even then the hole offers little respite. A poor tee shot can quickly turn a potential par into a battle for bogey or worse. It's a hole that rewards commitment and punishes indecision.
The 3rd hole presents a similar challenge, but this time it's the left side that causes concern.
With out of bounds running alongside the fairway, players are faced with a demanding tee shot early in their round. Standing on the tee, many members admit it's one of the holes where they feel the most pressure.
A well-struck drive can set up an excellent scoring opportunity, but any lapse in concentration can lead to a costly mistake. It's a classic risk-and-reward opening challenge that quickly reminds golfers that Cleveland is not a course that can be taken lightly.
If there was one hole that members most often describe as a true test, it might be the 5th.
Long, demanding and frequently played into the prevailing wind, the hole requires two quality shots just to reach the green in regulation. Adding to the challenge is the blind approach, which places a premium on local knowledge and confidence in your yardage.
When the wind is blowing, the 5th can feel every bit as tough as holes found on championship layouts around the country. Pars here are always hard earned and greatly appreciated.
No discussion about Cleveland's toughest holes would be complete without mentioning the 1st and 15th.
Both par 3s provide a stern examination of ball striking and club selection. Exposed to the elements and often influenced by the coastal breeze, these holes can play very differently from one day to the next.
Whether it's the opening tee shot of the round on the 1st or the pressure-packed challenge of the 15th, both holes have claimed their fair share of scorecards over the years.
Thankfully our set-up is no where near as long, or difficult as the US Open and we can watch the world's best players take on one of golf's toughest examinations from the comfort of our own sofa.
That being said, our members will face their own tough test this weekend, whether it's keeping their drive in play on the 3rd and 14th or finding the green on the demanding 5th, these are the holes that can define a round – and perhaps explain why they remain the most talked about tests on the course.
